BDR vs SDR: What Is the Difference, and Which One Does Your Pipeline Need?

A BDR (business development representative) creates new pipeline through outbound. An SDR (sales development representative) qualifies inbound demand that marketing has already generated. That is the textbook split, and in the UK mid-market it barely survives contact with a real org chart... most teams use the titles interchangeably. What decides whether either role books meetings is the seniority of the person and the quality of the data behind them, and that is the thing to price when you compare hiring against outsourcing.
A BDR (business development representative) creates new pipeline through outbound: cold calling, LinkedIn, email and events, aimed at buyers who have never heard of you. An SDR (sales development representative) qualifies inbound demand that marketing has already generated. That is the textbook split. In the UK mid-market it barely survives contact with a real org chart, because most teams use the titles interchangeably. At Sentrama we have run outbound for B2B clients since 2019, and the title has never booked a meeting. The seniority of the person holding it has.
What is the difference between a BDR and an SDR?
An SDR qualifies leads that come to you. A BDR goes out and creates conversations that would not otherwise exist. ZoomInfo words the split as direction of motion: SDRs respond to prospects who have already shown interest, BDRs proactively identify and reach out to new potential customers.
| Comparison point | BDR | SDR |
|---|---|---|
| Textbook remit | Creates new outbound pipeline | Qualifies inbound demand |
| Typical channels | Cold calling, LinkedIn, email, events | Marketing-generated leads, inbound follow-up |
| UK average base salary (Glassdoor, 2026) | £35,000 | £30,000 |
| UK average total pay (Glassdoor, 2026) | £45,963 | £39,681 |
| Average ramp time (The Bridge Group, 2025) | ~3 months | ~3 months |
| Average tenure (The Bridge Group, 2025) | 1.9 years | 1.9 years |
Hold the definitions loosely. I have spent seven years building outbound teams and I have hired for both titles. The job specs are usually the same document with a different heading. Some companies run the ZoomInfo split exactly. Plenty run it the other way round. A sceptical buyer should treat the acronym as decoration and read the actual remit underneath it.
Why do the titles blur in the UK?
The titles blur in the UK because the American SaaS org chart that produced them came over without the inbound volume that justified it.
The two-desk model assumes marketing generates enough qualified hand-raisers to keep a full-time qualification desk busy while a separate outbound desk hunts. Most UK mid-market B2B firms do not have that inbound. So the person called an SDR does outbound, the person called a BDR does outbound, and everyone means the same job: get a qualified first meeting with the right buyer.
That matters commercially for one reason. When you are buying outbound, in-house or through an agency, the label tells you nothing about what you will get. I have watched buyers agonise over whether they need a "BDR agency" or an "SDR agency" as if those were different products. They are the same product wearing different badges. The questions that separate providers are about data, seniority, process and proof, and none of them contains either acronym... I have set out what a BDR outsourcing company is actually selling separately.
What does a BDR cost in the UK?
Glassdoor's UK data puts a business development representative at £35,000 average base and £45,963 average total pay, with a range from £28,148 to £83,931. The sample is small (39 submitted salaries), so treat it as directional. The equivalent SDR figures run £30,000 base and £39,681 total. The BDR badge carries roughly a £5,000 premium, which tells you the market quietly agrees that creating pipeline from nothing is harder than qualifying it.
The salary is the visible cost. The Bridge Group's 2025 research across 351 B2B companies adds the rest: 3.0 months of average ramp before full productivity, 1.9 years of average tenure before you rehire and re-ramp, and only 60% of reps hitting quota... the lowest figure on record. Employer National Insurance, pension, tooling, data and recruitment fees sit on top. I have run the full year-one maths in how much an outsourced SDR team costs in the UK; the same logic applies to a BDR hire with a higher base.
Which one does your pipeline actually need?
Whether you need a BDR or an SDR comes down to your inbound volume, so count it before you decide. Run the last quarter's numbers.
If marketing generates more qualified hand-raisers than your closers can work, you need the qualification motion, and a junior SDR desk can carry it. In seven years I have met very few UK mid-market firms in that position.
If your pipeline depends on conversations with buyers who have never heard of you, you need the outbound motion, whatever your job spec calls it. For a B2B company with a defined ideal customer profile and £10k+ average contract value, that is nearly always the honest answer, because inbound alone rarely fills the calendar of a sales team carrying real targets. Buying it in rather than hiring it? The evaluation checklist is in how to choose a B2B outbound agency.
The trap sits in the middle: hiring one junior rep with a generic data list and asking them to run both motions at once. When outbound breaks it breaks in one of four places... data, strategy, technology or humans... and that setup breaks at least two of them on day one. The rep is too junior to hold a senior conversation, and the data was never engineered to connect.
What decides whether the role books meetings?
The seniority of the caller and the quality of the data behind them decide whether the role books meetings. The badge on the job spec plays no part.
The Bridge Group's 2025 study puts the average rep at 112 activities a day for 4.1 quality conversations. That ratio is what an unengineered list does to a working day: voicemails, switchboards, gatekeepers and dead numbers. Gong's published B2B connect-rate benchmark sits at 5.4%. The strongest published figure I can find is Salesfinity's 10.1%, measured across 1.3 million dials. I have broken the full dial-to-meeting maths down in how many dials it takes to book a meeting.
One in four of our dials connects to a human. The gap comes from pickup-scored leads and verified mobiles on the data side, and senior reps who have sold before on the human side... never from the acronym on the contract. It is why the floor books 500+ qualified meetings for clients every month, and why we can put a guarantee behind the number. Whether the contract says BDR or SDR, the mechanics underneath are what you are actually buying.
Key figures
- £35,000 is the average UK base salary for a BDR against £30,000 for an SDR; total pay runs £45,963 vs £39,681 (Glassdoor, 2026).
- 3.0 months is the average ramp to productivity, 1.9 years the average tenure, and only 60% of reps hit quota... the lowest on record (The Bridge Group, 2025).
- 112 activities a day produce 4.1 quality conversations for the average rep (The Bridge Group, 2025).
- 5.4% is Gong's published B2B connect benchmark; 10.1% is Salesfinity's July 2026 figure across 1.3 million dials.
- 25%+ of dials connect to a human on the Sentrama floor, which books 500+ qualified meetings for clients every month.
The Monday move
Pull your last 90 days of pipeline and mark every opportunity as inbound or outbound-sourced. If the outbound column is thin and your growth plan assumes it will not be, you have a motion gap, and no job title will close it. Then price the fix properly, on cost per qualified meeting rather than cost per head.
Before you hire another BDR, work out your real cost per meeting. The SDR Efficiency Calculator does the maths.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What does BDR stand for in sales?
- Business development representative: a rep who creates new pipeline through outbound prospecting rather than qualifying inbound leads. In UK usage the title is often applied to any outbound prospecting role, so read the remit rather than the acronym.
- Is a BDR more senior than an SDR?
- Not formally, but UK pay data leans that way. Glassdoor puts the average BDR base at £35,000 against £30,000 for an SDR, a premium the market pays because creating pipeline from cold is harder than qualifying warm interest. Neither title guarantees the seniority that actually books meetings.
- How much does a BDR earn in the UK?
- Glassdoor's 2026 UK data shows £35,000 average base and £45,963 average total pay including commission, across a range of £28,148 to £83,931. The sample is small, so treat the figures as directional rather than precise.
- What is an outsourced BDR, and what should the service include?
- An outsourced BDR is a rep employed by an agency to run outbound prospecting on your behalf: list building, calling, follow-up and booked meetings with qualified buyers. The service should cover all four of the places outbound breaks... data, strategy, technology and humans... and put a number on delivery, ideally with a guarantee attached. In the UK the titles are interchangeable, so judge the delivery rather than the acronym.
- Should I hire a BDR in-house or outsource the function?
- Convert both options to cost per qualified meeting before you decide. An in-house hire carries salary, ramp of around three months and rehiring every two years on average tenure. An outsourced team should be judged on the same unit: what does one qualified meeting with your ideal customer cost, and who carries the risk if it is not delivered?
- Do AI SDR tools replace BDRs?
- No. AI makes a good outbound rep more efficient at research and call preparation, and it exposes bad outbound faster than ever. The conversation that turns a cold contact into a booked meeting is still a human one, because B2B buyers make serious purchases by speaking to people.
